Abstract:
This article is an examination of confined spaces, particularly in the construction
industry, and the associated safety regulations. It discusses the evolution of safety rules by
OSHA, the significant costs and benefits of these regulations, and the responsibilities of
employers in ensuring safe confined space operations. Specific focus is given to Sound Transit, a
public transportation agency in Seattle, detailing its approach to managing confined spaces
amidst its infrastructure expansion. The article covers various aspects like defining confined
spaces, the implementation of safety programs, hazard identification, and the use of technology
like QR codes for the communication of safety documents. It concludes by touching on personal
goals as an Industrial Hygienist.
